Frameless Glass Balustrades: A Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about frameless glass balustrades — from glass types and fixing methods to costs and maintenance.

Frameless glass balustrades are the pinnacle of modern architectural design, offering unobstructed views and a sleek, minimalist aesthetic that complements any property.

What Is a Frameless Glass Balustrade?

A frameless glass balustrade uses toughened or laminated glass panels secured without visible posts or frames. The glass itself acts as the structural barrier, typically fixed using base channels, spigots, or clamps.

Glass Types

  • Toughened Glass (BS EN 12150): Heat-treated to be 4-5 times stronger than standard glass. Breaks into small, safe pieces.
  • Laminated Glass (BS EN 14449): Two layers bonded with an interlayer. If broken, fragments stay attached to the interlayer.
  • Toughened Laminated: The gold standard — combines both properties for maximum safety and strength.

Thickness Options

The right glass thickness depends on your setup. Common options:

  • 15mm toughened — suitable when a top handrail is incorporated
  • 17.5mm laminated — required for drops over 600mm without a handrail
  • 21.5mm laminated — maximum strength for exposed or commercial applications

For drops over 600mm without a handrail, 17.5mm or 21.5mm laminate is required. For low-level applications under 600mm, rules are more relaxed.

Cost Per Metre

Supply-only glass balustrades range from £165 to £360 per linear metre inc. VAT, depending on the system, glass specification, and project size. Rates reduce for larger runs. Supply and install is available at a flat rate per metre with a minimum charge.

Maintenance

Glass balustrades are remarkably low maintenance. Regular cleaning with warm soapy water keeps them looking pristine. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Stainless steel fittings should be wiped down periodically, especially in coastal environments.

Is Frameless Right for You?
