Glass Balustrade Maintenance: Keep Them Looking Perfect

One of the best things about glass balustrades is how little maintenance they need. With a few simple habits, your balustrades will look as good as the day they were installed.

Regular Cleaning

Frequency: Monthly for outdoor installations, every 2-3 months for indoor.

Method:

1. Rinse with clean water to remove loose dirt

2. Apply warm soapy water (washing-up liquid is perfect)

3. Wipe with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge

4. Rinse thoroughly

5. Dry with a microfibre cloth for a streak-free finish

What to Avoid

• Abrasive cleaners — they can scratch the glass surface
• Wire wool or scouring pads — will permanently scratch
• Bleach on stainless steel — causes pitting and corrosion
• Pressure washers directly on seals — can force water behind the glass

Stainless Steel Care

If your system includes stainless steel posts, clamps, or handrails:

• Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild detergent
• Apply a stainless steel cleaner/polish quarterly
• In coastal areas, clean monthly to prevent salt corrosion
• 316 marine-grade stainless steel is more resistant than 304
• For high salt/coastal environments, mirror finish 316 offers maximum resistance against tarnishing

Rubber Seals and Gaskets

The rubber or silicone gaskets that hold glass in channels and clamps should be inspected annually. Look for:

• Cracking or perishing
• Gaps or displacement
• Water ingress behind the glass

Replace gaskets if they show signs of wear. This is a simple, low-cost maintenance item that protects your investment.

Seasonal Tips

Winter: Clear snow and ice gently. Don't use salt or de-icer directly on glass or stainless steel.

Spring: Give everything a thorough clean after winter. Check all fixings are tight.

Summer: The best time for a deep clean. Apply protective coating if desired.

Autumn: Clear fallen leaves from base channels to prevent drainage issues.
